Going Green: Gomadic Looks For A Charity

Since we began our Tip Exchange technology concept a few years ago, we have become very aware of the amount of waste most consumers create. As nomadic workers ourselves, we know about the massive pile of wires that accumulate with all of our handheld devices and the cords that are wasted each time we upgrade.  This got to be just too much for us, so we created Tip Exchange.

While our tip exchange products were born out of technological efficiency rather than environmental concerns, we soon realized that Tip Exchange can have a significant impact on the climate crisis if implemented on a large scale.

Gomadic products allow our users not only to have just one charging solution for almost all devices, such as ipods, Treos, Blackberrys, PDA's, Motorola Razors, etc., but to keep that charging source indefinitely.  Instead of buying a new car charger and wall charger every time you get a new device, Gomadic cables allow you to utilize the same cord by simply changing the removable tips that go along with each device.

A very green concept indeed. Our tips cost much less and require fewer natural resources to produce than the wires and circuitry in most hand-held accessories.  This means you're saving on both ends of the consumption process:  Cost savings when you buy the device and environmental savings on the back end since you can reuse your chargers instead of disposing of them, helping to solve environmental problems, such as biodegradability, the carbon imprint created from transporting, etc. and so on.

It occurred to us that if we implemented our system on the large scale, as with corporations, we could make a significant imprint on the way people consume technological products in our disposable culture.  We would be offering an environmental-friendly solution for companies that would allow them to upgrade devices for their employees, but recycle their chargers.   See our recent release on the subject.

So it looks like we went green without even knowing it, and right now we’re in the process of searching for the right small charity to contribute 5% of our profits on large scale orders of 500 or more.  We’re hoping to donate to an education program that informs the public about buying responsibly, which to us means opting for smarter recyclable products. A recyclable idea too—if you think about it.

We’ll keep you posted about our progress on this front and everything else gomadic.
